Managing hydrogen as a fuel in the energy and utilities systems and as part of the manufacturing process is a complex problem, and given recent sulfur regulations relating to gasoline and diesel fuel, its proper management has become a critical issue for refiners. Simply focusing on the hydrogen system alone and ignoring the interactions with the utilities systems and process units results in a sub-optimal solution. We have found that addressing this critical issue from a holistic viewpoint creates opportunities to more cost effectively manage hydrogen generation and use.
